Our Explorer curriculum - celebrations and educational visits

Despite living on an Island with a vast array of amazing opportunities to explore, many of our children do not have access or the means to experience this outside of school.  Our explorers curriculum allows our children to enrich their learning and focuses on the whole child (Including their fitness, health, well-being and mental health) and ensures they explore outside of the classroom! Our explorer curriculum also aligns closely to our school mission of Live, Love and Believe, where children grow to live a full life, love learning and believe in themselves and their abilities.

This strand of our curriculum focuses on three areas: heritage, environment and personal development.  The Island provides a rich basis to learn about these areas to support the children's classroom work and enhance our broad curriculum.  The Isle of Wight has recently been awarded Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO.  It has been recognised for its outstanding environment and landscapes, and how it connects to local people with nature.  The Island also offers a vast array of English heritage sites and places of Historical and scientific significance. We are fortunate that we can be part of the Island community to learn about, appreciate and celebrate the unique ecosystem and the places to experience the awe and wonder of the Isle of Wight. We also want our young people to grow and develop themselves as individuals and resonsible citizens, so we build in opportunities into our explorer curriculum for them to work on what makes them unique and provide vital life skills they will need for the future.

Many subject areas of the National Curriculum are covered through our explorer trips and visits,  including Geography, History, Maths, Art and PSHE. Children are given the freedom to experience new activities and respond to the natural world around them.

In addition, class teachers also invite external visitors in to share their expertise and arrange termly year group trips to support their curriculum and personal development.

Please see our comprehensive list of trips and visits for each year group to see how our explorer curriculum works!
